what do you think?

The answers are often obvious once you get the questions right.

I do not know where the photo above is from, I snatched it from Manifest Destiny, who snatched it from...?. It feeds my linen jacket addiction and also inspired what I believe may be a great idea. I'll test it out on you first.

Over the past few summers I've had several linen sport coats made. At the time, I was larger, now very little of my summer wardrobe accommodates the new me. I'm not dismayed by that, nor since I still have a way to go, am I looking forward to shelling out for new duds. These are troubled times.

So it's back to the closet, and on to the tailor, making do with something old, something new. But what to do with the linen jacket collection?

Suppose they became double breasted jackets?

Admittedly, with the jaunty red and yellow numbers from Peterman, my signature summer look would be DB, but I could live with that. Beats letting old friends rot in the wardrobe.

Any thoughts?

i have a classic armani grey linen that is single-breasted but with a wide lapel that i wear as much as i can before the cool weather hits. i like that you keep the ole friends in the rotation. as seinfeld would say, "goldie [his fave t-shirt] has to stay in the rotation."

Presuming your shoulders are the same size as they were, wouldn't it be easiest just to alter the jackets to your new size. A good tailor will surely perform that kind of miracle.

Oh, and congrats on the new size.

I love the double breasted look. But VB raises a good point. Maybe a couple of each.

Any man willing to have a linen jacket made up with a shawl collar would be willing to have a couple of belt loops added and a sash made, turning the slightly oversized jacket into something of a smoking ensemble. Black cotton turtleneck.

I admire your discipline and hard work, Sir.

That is always the trouble with changing size... Well done you and keep up the good work!

I think a shawl collar double breasted linen jacket would look incredible, assuming, like others said, you didn't just want to have it tailored to your new size (congrats again on that!).

Please take this as a constructive suggestion with no offense intended. But a double breasted jacket is successful only when there is a slight inward taper at the waist, as shown on the form in the first photo.

Congratulations on the weight loss.

I think you would look fabulous if you had it tailored to fit, but keep the jacket as single breasted.

Can't wait to see what you decide on.

I thought of this too, having lost quite a bit of weight myself. The hitch-in-the-giddy-up is that the pockets will be to close in the middle, in a kangaroo sort-of-way . . . alas I still have all the ol' suits, gave one away and have regretted it ever since . . . mostly because I don't get to see it anymore.

Caveat: a double breasted jacket wants square corners, where a single breasetd has rounded corners. Take that into consideration.

That said, a double breatsed shawl collar in tan linen is murderous...in a good way.
