Why?

from Classical-Kit.tumblr.com.

Friends I come hat in hand hoping to learn, from you the experts.

Brooks Brothers summer 12

Perhaps it's the exuberance of youth, but in what setting, where or why north of Bermuda w/c/should one wear shorts, sport coat, dress shirt and tie?

Why no pocket linen on the BB guy? They have me stumped.

It is fun, looks fun, wears great in heat and looks SO so so much nicer than pants about ones ankle with yer ass hanging out, sweat pants, untucked t-shirts or untucked "dress" shirts...
The evolution of prep?

It is a nice alternative to what most young men are wearing these days, I agree. Although, I still think it looks a bit odd.

As to why no linen on BB guy, I think these squinting eyes read in the block of text there that his [2 fitted, 2 short, 2 tight] jacket is linen. As to why in general, many of us rootless Americans [see RL/Polo for flawless interpretation] aspire to the insouciance of the Haves around the globe -- Bermuda, Nantucket, Newport, English Colonial tropics suave -- this look and its derivatives "convey" leisured elite. I think ADG would find this too "studied" to wear himself, but I'd like to see his iteration of the look just the same.

This outfit belongs only in very certain locales - the vocabulary is an extension of where one is when one dons such attire.

It is like wearing an enormous hat to the Kentucky Derby. I would not wear that same hat to go grocery shopping, even though it might get me a lot of attention...

And I would not accompany Husband anywhere if he emerged from his closet in that get-up. Besides which, that jacket needs to fit properly, and needs to (totally) be linen.

I'm with you on this look. It makes no sense anywhere but Bermuda or Australia. Any place else it's just hipster posing.

This look has existed in Southern California for over 30 years... think frat boys...

@ Scale Worm, I'll agree: there are far greater evils than this outfit. I'd much rather see this walking down the sidewalk than sweatpants or sagging jeans.

That doesn't mean that I like the outfit, it just means I'll accept seeing it over some of the alternatives.

I'm reminded of stories by my father and uncles telling of what a big deal it was to finally get long pants. We've come a long way baby

I woke up this morning realizing I don't understand the fundamentals of the pocket linen imperative. Please explain why a man does not have the freedom to decide whether he wants to arrange a display coming from his jacket pocket.

The sole reason an exterior breast pocket is sown on men's jackets is to provide a home for a pocket square. Of course you can chose to ignore, but as long as you're not matchy matchy the square provides a more finished look. A way to care about your appearance without seeming to care.

It's one of those things men knew until that knowledge was lost in the mid 60's.

Ahhhh. Men just knew to do it.

You have sent me to the family archives on a pocket square hunt back in the times when men knew what to do, found a pic you might enjoy. How old are seniors in college, about 20, 21? These men look older than I do, they're just seniors. I'll scan it and send...

think of pocket squares as the male of equivalent of earings. it's a semi-required part of the ensemble

I like it, it's young and so much better than almost everything else I see. Pajama pants at breakfast, please, at least roll into some old jeans, please.
