A Fool's Errand

cleaningriversideca.info

A boy with too much time becomes a danger to himself and others. I'm the living embodiment of that old saw.

Have you ever sold your house? Savvy sellers spend the month prior to listing their home for sale, scrubbing, primping, uncluttering and repairing. The goal is to make your home more perfect than any other listing. The easiest to overlook is the repairing. A common refrain is "I wish I had fixed that years ago" especially after installing a $5 part. Human nature being what it is allows most of us to work around the minor faults of our home. Light switches that stick and doors that won't stay closed are easily overlooked. Hopefully the seller of your new home has done these things as well. You're too tired after moving to consider picking up a paint or scrub brush for a long time.

We have lived in our home 6 years. Long enough to forget the trauma of moving, but not long enough to get used to the faults that have crept in since we arrived, so Mrs. T and I decided last weekend to do something about it. We are going from room to room, and inside out, cleaning, decluttering, painting and repairing just as if we were moving, which we aren't. My outside list is 6 pages long, the inside list keeps me up nights.

I'm surprised by how much needs doing when you take time to look, and by how much fresher and brighter things are after a bit of attention. This too shall pass.

Do it the smart way. Throw a party with a few pizzas and beer. Then challenge the men present to "fix" certain conditions that have long vexed you. I learned this trick a long time ago from a guy name Thomas Sawyer. It works every time!

This post is just a tremendously nicely structured piece. Awesome things you have here. Best of luck!

Good for you, though, doing it for you and not just to put it on the market. We've sold two houses during out marriage and each time felt that just as our houses were finally in order, it was only time to sell them!

About 7 years ago we had two bedrooms upstairs remodeled. Best thing we ever did. Before the contractor arrived, I went through both bedrooms discarding every single item that had been bugging me, especially the closets (magnets for crap we don't need or want anymore--easier just to close the door.) It was liberating.

I've spent all d******** day cleaning the garage. I wish I could lose interest in this project, but I must persevere. Mrs. T is tackling the projects that bug her the most and is having loads of fun.

Interesting that you should mention the garage...a friend of mine mentioned that he was looking for a M151-A1 jeep. Did I know of any. I seem to recall that you have one langushing in your garage. Any interest in selling? He wants pictures, you have them on a previous post. Let me know. I seem to have lost your email address. I have some other questions of you, my friend, that I would like to discuss via email as well. Thanks

OP click on the profile. the email address there will find me.

Alas, sadly the jeep has gone to a museum which will likely go broke attempting to restore the poor thing.

Brilliant idea. I've spent thousands and weeks making houses perfect to rent, putting in amenities I'd love to have had, I just couldn't be bothered to do it for myself. Silly - no out and out stupid - of me. Well done you!

Brilliant idea. Every time we have gotten a house ready to sell I have asked myself why we hadn't done the same while we were living in the house and then enjoy it!
