#2 son
If you were paying attention last week, you would have figured out that today was #2 son's birthday, hence the 53 week part. Today's birthday boy is on the left.
He is bigger now, a forest fire fighter, this year in the Pacific Northwest. He has the job he has aspired to for a long time, a first responder, dropped off by helicopter as close as possible to a raging fire, followed by several very long hikes.
Madness.
Off season, he's a college student on the 10 year plan. Unfortunately, fire season and school terms overlap.
With school and fire work, I haven't seen him in a couple of years, and miss him terribly.
Happy Birthday Bunky

Happy Birthday son #2:)!
have not seen your son in a couple of years....that's awful. get on plane if you have to...
And what a commendable vocation...smoke jumper! Takes big you-know-whats for that gig.
Two years is way too long! Especially for a son in such an awful (in my thinking) job. I would book a trip soon, and probably regularly.
Toad, I wish you strength - and a plane ticket. Oh, and congratulations on having such a brave child. A job like that does seem like madness to the rest of us and these men are generally speaking unsung heroes - but heroes they are!
Happy Birthday #2, and thank you for the job you do.
Happy Birthday to Son#2, and my thanks not only to him, but to you and Mrs. Toad for your sacrifices.
Ah Toad, hope you get to see him soon.
Get on a plane. Now.
I hope you get to see each other soon!
Happy Birthday #2!
Happy birthday to son secundo! He has quite the life, doesn't he? I agree with the other folks - if you can, hop on a plane and visit that boy pronto! :)
Have a Happy and Safe Birthday, #2! You are a very brave young man and a credit to your parents.
Let's start a collection to get Toad his very own parachute.
Mercer & Sons can make the chute itself -- maybe something in a Bengal striped silk, while the harness could be made up by Wiley Brothers, and the whole thing stuffed into a croc bag run up by April in Paris.
(Or maybe we could just get him a ticket.)
You are all very sweet
It just seems like two years since you've seen him so it's time to book a flight. I'll bet he misses his dad too.
I live in the forest. Such men are guardian angels to us.
Although it has been too long, I'm reminded I saw him last August when I delivered my car to the woods of Colorado
Colorado is blessed for Bunky this evening. Can't extend our gratitude enough, hopefully with the containment of the fire some of the tears will subside.
