Add your two cents worth

Photo from Mr. Mort

I think I want a linen sport coat. Just like this one. Heavy weight linen, say 300 grams, probably black. Unlined, open patch pockets, surgeon cuffs, side vents. What am I missing?

So what brought that on all of the sudden? I spent a bit of yesterday afternoon with my dear friend the Polish tailor. Last fall I had a modern Blackwatch plaid sport coat made, that I was never really happy with. For multiple reasons it just didn't fit well.

So, being bored, I spent a little time cleaning up my closet and came across it. In a fit of pre-planning I'd rarely experienced in my life, thought why not get it fixed in advance of when I need it. Sounds like a plan.

In pure tailor speak, he led with, put on a little weight huh? I allowed that for once that wasn't the case, and to prove it, I had brought the jacket he made the month prior to the blackwatch. Fits like a dream.

So now I wait, but while there I fell in love with a piece of black linen fabric.

By the way, our friend Cristoffer, of the Well Dressed blog gave up the ghost yesterday. His blog shall be missed.

Three days ago while leaving a parking lot, I spotted a gentleman - late 80s maybe - putting groceries in his car.
Wearing the most dapper and classically sublime summer clothing - a most perfect shade of lightweight khaki trousers - faded, soft, slightly rumpled - the most ethereal shade of pale, icy blue shirt, a gorgeous pink and navy belt, weathered, salt beaten top-siders, and a linen jacket.
The linen jacket is what made it.
Get one, now.
I turned my car around, pulled up next to him and told him how handsome he was and what great taste he had in clothes.
Get. One. NOW.
WI fan.

Toad, The jacket in the photo is unconstructed. If that's the look you want then going unconstructed is more important than unlined.

Mr. Rumpled from Mr. Mort is adorable.

Linen, yes. Rumpled, unquestionably. Black, no. Go for the natural color. You are too interesting to be wearing black.

Ah, this is too dapper in the natural color. I only insist that you accessorize it with the right spectacles and a bemused expression like the gentleman in this picture.

I love the shirt collar as much as the jacket.

If you are in super shape or naturally thin, go for it. Otherwise, linen tends to look sloppy. Eileen Fisher has made me look like a homeless woman on occasion...

I like how this fellow tucks his tie in. Somehow, however Sisyphean it might be, I prefer the look of linen that looks like it's seen an iron fairly recently. I agree with the comment that the black might be too severe. Black faded nearly to blue maybe, but still. . .

As Will from A Suitable Wardrobe says, lightweight linen wrinkles, heavier weight rumples. I prefer rumples, for jackets and suits.

Tan or white, 100% yes. Black, I don't know...
