I'm considering a slog

Has anyone, not paid to do so, read the entire 12 vol. A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell? I've space on the bookshelves and it's sounds like an ideal fall project. A sort of followup to the wonderful WWI history I recently completed, "To End all Wars" by Adam Hochschild.

Or is there a starter Powell, one needs conquering, before tackling his opus?

I'd like to read the book by Hochschild, I am so intrigued by the Powell books-I would have to say take all the "time" you need-like years and years with other books in between- I love this sort of thing.pgt

Interesting. I recently read a book, "Children of the Sun", a sociological )more or less) tome on the Oxford generation which started there right after the Great War, and Powell as well as Waugh is mentioned as one of the typical chroniclers to read. Once had several of the "Dance" novels, now have to find the &%$#? things again, as I'm planning the same campaign.

You will not regret reading Powell. Dance to the Music of Time will change your life.

^ I agree with Michael above. I don't know if it's changed my life, but it is certainly a work that I often think about and contains themes and ideas that have illuminated aspects of life for me. I've read most of it twice, some parts three times.

The narration is first person and beautifully done; the narrator is a sort of English Nick Carraway. The character of Widmerpool is one of the most memorable you will ever encounter. Sometimes the writing is so indirect that it's hard to figure out just what is going on, but that's part of the charm. I wouldn't waste a minute.

Please do the slog, if only to inspire your loyal followers; "Dance to the Music of Time" has graced my bookshelf lo these many years, but I have yet to take the plunge.

PS - Your new seersucker header is just too dapper.
