Jerry Orbach-cool guy

I admit to loving The Fantasticks. I blame that on Jerry Orbach. As a young man he had a face for radio, and a voice few would expect able to sing, much less lead in an off Broadway play. He became better looking as he matured, still few would expect he could sing.

Happy Birthday Jerry, wherever you are.

H.L. Mencken-Cool Guy Redux

Today would be the birthday of Henry Louis Mencken, sage of Baltimore, social critic and spokesman for the civilized minority, attacker of anything deemed inimical to the freedom of the artist. He described his function as "stirring up the animals". Fifty six years after his death, and 64 years since he was able to write a word, his wit and wisdom still shines. Harry is one of my patron saints. Here are some of my favorite Menckenisms.
*******************************************************************
It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

The typical American of today has lost all the love of liberty that his forefathers had, and all their disgust of emotion, and pride in self-reliance. he is fed no longer by Davy Crocketts; he is led by cheer leaders, press agents, word mongers, uplifters.

The United States, to my eye, is incomparably the greatest show on earth...we have clowns among us who are as far above the clowns of any other great state as Jack Dempsey is above the paralytic-and not a few dozen or score of them, but whole droves and herds.

The American people, taking one with another, constitute the most timorous, sniveling, poltroonish mob of serfs and goose-steppers ever gathered under one flag in Christendom since the end of the Middle Ages.

The worst government is often the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression.

All government, of course, is against liberty.

A society made up of individuals who were all capable of original thought would probably be unendurable.

Most people want security in this world, not liberty.

To die for an idea; it is unquestionably noble. But how much nobler it would be if men died for ideas that were true!

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.

Faith may be defined briefly as an illogical belief in the occurrence of the improbable.

Husbands never become good; they merely become proficient.

No matter how happily a woman may be married, it always pleases her to discover that there is a nice man who wishes that she were not.

It is now quite lawful for a Catholic woman to avoid pregnancy by a resort to mathematics, though she is still forbidden to resort to physics or chemistry.

Puritanism. The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.

The cynics are right nine times out of ten.

The most costly of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind.

If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl.

Happy birthday Harry!

Martha Stewart - Cool guy

Not often enough do I include a woman in the Cool Guy's Club, but today I'll make an exception in order to include today's birthday girl Martha Stewart in the pantheon.

Like her fellow CGC member, Mr. Lauren, Ms. Stewart is a cultural icon who is an easy target for those unwilling to understand the commitment involved creating an empire all the while making it appear effortless, yet are willing to poke fun at her expense. Also like Ralph, she has a made a large impact on the tastes, the hopes, the dreams and aspirations of American homemakers.

In the not too distant past, emulating (or at least trying once) Martha's way was "the right way" all else was less than the best. That no one could do it like Martha was beside the point. In her prime, you either loved or loathed her. For those legions who loved her, she was the gold standard.

Happy Birthday, Martha.

Sir Jackie Stewart - cool guy

from The Gentleman's Slipper by Fiona Dreesmann

Celebrating his 73rd today is 3 time World Champion Formula One racer Jackie Stewart, The Flying Scotsman. Jackie record of most wins in Formula One (27) stood for 14 years, and his record of most wins by a British driver stood for 19 years. He was a boyhood hero of mine.

During his racing career, the likelihood of a driver who raced in F1 for 5 years being killed racing were two out of three. In a horrific crash in the Belgium Grand Prix of 1966, Stewart was trapped in his car for 25 minutes with leaking fuel over him. He was extricated by other drivers with tools borrowed from spectators. Having no doctors or medical crew at the track, a truck drove him to an ambulance, which then got lost on its way to the hospital. Fortunately he wasn't badly hurt, but the accident changed his life and view of racing. He became racing's most outspoken advocate for safety at the track, and in the cars.

Stewart had earned a reputation as a skilled yet prudent driver. He was popular with racing fans and readily available to the press to clearly articulate his message. His growing victory total proved he was fearless and no one doubted his bravery when he called for greater driver protections (mandatory seat belts and full face helmets) and led successful driver boycotts of race tracks which did not have adequate safety, fire and medical resources available. To quote Jackie "I would have been a much more popular World Champion if I had always said what people wanted to hear. I might have been dead, but definitely more popular." His legacy as a safety advocate is as great as his racing legend.

Throughout it all he has had one great woman by his side, his childhood sweetheart. They'll celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.

Happy Birthday Sir Jackie, thanks for the memories.

Cool Guy- Dominique Browning

In the early days of this blog I would periodically raise the question "Where's Dominique?". Everyone seemed to have an online presence but her. Dominique's devoted fans would email me questions about her whereabouts/comings and goings, as if I knew, I answered their queries as best as I could.

After about the fourth "where's D" her publicist commented that Dominique was engaged in the finishing touches of her latest book,Slow Love which would be published in the not too distant future. Shortly before Slow Love was published, Dominique emailed, and we have maintained an irregular ecorrespondence since, one thread of which led to my standing her up on my first trip East. I must have been out of my mind.

Today is her birthday. I trust she won't object to being included as one of the "cool guys". She is far more than the woman who once... Besides being a gifted writer, blogger and editor, mother and mentor, she is a concerned citizen donating her considerable talents writing for The Environmental Defense Fund. Her work there will have a far more lasting impact than whatever came before.

Happy Birthday Mrs. B.

Cool Guy- Burt Bacharach

If you had asked me earlier if I could change anything about my appearance, I would have said I wanted to look like a young Burt Bacharach. Maybe it was the hair.

Burt turns 85 today.

Only saw him perform live once, july 4, 1970

The music playing in the front seat while...

Happy Birthday Mr. B, another Kansas City boy done good.

Cool Guy - Tom Wolfe

Today we celebrate the birthday of National Living Treasure, Mr. Tom Wolfe.

If you are unfamiliar with his writing, you are missing a snapshot of America. Wolfe's writing is central to understanding American culture, obsession and fear over the past 50 years.

Curious what 1960's America was like? You could do a lot worse than The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby , or The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The '70's: The Right Stuff, or perhaps The Painted Word. 80's- The Bonfire of the Vanities, 90's- A Man in Full.

My all time favorite is still Radical Chic and Mau Mauing the Flak Catchers.

Happy Birthday Mr. Wolfe, may you life forever.

Marco Pierre White - Cool Guy

Cool Guy. Marco Pierre White

Admit it. Until Wednesday night's television show you have never heard of Marco Pierre White. Tony Bourdain fans have known him a long time. Its OK. He's English. You don't have to know every cool guy in the world. That's why I'm here. MPW is one of the cool ones.

First the photo above. Anthony Bourdain says its the photo that made him want to be a chef. Young, brooding, determined. Have you ever seen a better looking guy? A guy girls mothers warned them about. A young Keith Richards perhaps.

MPW evolved from this to be a food star, and one of the world's great restaurateurs. For sport check out his inn and restaurant The Yew Tree.

So now he's a little older. Got a bit more cash in the pockets. Still driven, still brooding, more of a perfectionist than ever. Better looking too. It's claimed he made Gordon Ramsey cry when Gordon apprenticed with him.

It's tough to find a photo of him that doesn't look like every other. In a suit he's Saville Row, Shirts are pretty conservative in a non-British sort of way, no checks, or loud stripes. When you do catch him in a tie it looks like a very Italian get up. I'd sell your soul for his hair.

Obligatory Cigar shot.

Like most cool guys he has his share of styling tics. Often in a suit, you'll see him with no tie, shirt sleeves unfastened, no socks, wearing tennis shoes, especially those stupid vintage Vans. Not everyone can pull that off without looking like an idiot. It takes elan, which he has in spades.

Looks happy with the wife doesn't he?
