I'm sure there is a story here, but I don't know it. Interesting sculpture however.
I haven't seen the statue in person, but always imagined Ignatius as being much more....plump.One of my favorite books.
I was just thinking the same thing - he doesn't even look "fat" in the 2012 sense of the word!
